The 2007 Turkey Trot was a fun family
effort put together by Karen Borrego and her family. The race is
intended for fun but last year's race at Anderson Creek was also a
fundraiser for the Georgia Land Trust.
The Turkey Trot has been a longstanding
tradition in the Borrego's home town of Punta Gorda Florida,
being run annually at the local college on Thanksgiving morning with
all the family and friends in town visiting the Borregos.
The Borregos transferred the tradition
to their new home in Anderson Creek in North Georgia. Anderson
Creek's developer, Doug David, had spoken highly of the Georgia Land
Trust and the race organizers thought it would be worthwhile
for participants to contribute to GLT. Altogether participants
donated more than $250 to GLT.
The one mile walk and a 5k run covered
gravel roads and wooded trails. All the runners said it was a
challenging course (particularly for the Florida flatlanders!) The
male winner of the 5k was 14-year-old Anthony Borrego from Punta
Gorda, Florida, and the female winner was 16-year-old Alyssa Ortiz
from Dallas, Texas. After the 5k, all entrants and spectators
enjoyed coffee, hot cider, water, muffins, and fruit.
Karen Borrego reports, "We were really
thankful for the support and participation of the families in the
neighborhood, and we are excited for the run and walk to be an even
larger event in 2008."
