Why Longleaf?
Longleaf pine forests are among some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in North America. These historic forests provide excellent habitat for not only game species like bobwhite quail, white-tailed deer, and turkeys, but also rare and endangered species like gopher tortoises and red-cockaded woodpeckers.
Restoring longleaf pine not only benefits landowners by offering scenic, recreational, and economic opportunities, but furthers GALT’s mission by conserving this important ecosystem. It is a win-win!

A Journey of Habitat Improvement
This landowner started with a dense forest of loblolly pines with little to no sunlight reaching the forest floor. Virtually no forage existed for game species.
In late spring 2025, a commercial timber harvest was conducted. 20 acres were final-harvested, and 30 acres were thinned.
In March 2026, all the commercially thinned timber was burned.
By July 2026, a sea of native grasses, forbs, and legumes emerged from the seed bank. In winter, we plan to replant the harvested 20 acres with longleaf pine.
